Introduction
Golf grips are the only point of contact between you and your club, yet they're one of the most neglected pieces of equipment. Worn grips can cost you shots without you even realising it. So how do you know when it's time to replace them?
The General Rule of Thumb
Most golf instructors and club fitters recommend replacing your grips once a year, or every 40 rounds — whichever comes first. If you play more than twice a week, you may need to regrip more frequently.
Signs Your Grips Need Replacing
- Slipping during the swing: If you're gripping tighter than usual to maintain control, your grips have likely lost their tackiness.
- Shiny or smooth surface: A worn grip loses its texture and becomes slick, especially in the areas where your hands make the most contact.
- Cracks or hardening: Rubber degrades over time, particularly when exposed to UV light and heat. Cracks are a clear sign it's time to replace.
- Inconsistent feel: If your grip feels different from club to club, some may be more worn than others and should be replaced as a set.
- Visible wear patterns: Heavy wear in specific spots indicates your grip has been compressed and is no longer performing as designed.
How Storage Affects Grip Life
Grips stored in hot car boots or exposed to direct sunlight will degrade faster. Store your clubs in a cool, dry place and clean your grips regularly with mild soap and water to extend their life.
How Often Do Tour Pros Replace Grips?
Tour professionals often replace their grips every few weeks or even before every tournament. While that's not necessary for most amateur golfers, it highlights just how important fresh grips are to performance.
